10 Things Your Husband Wishes You Knew But May Never Say
What I’m learning about marriage at 22 that I wish someone had told me sooner.
I’m 22 years old, and I’ve been married to my husband for a year.
That probably means I am not exactly the person you would expect to give marriage advice.
I haven’t been married for 20, 30, or 40 years. I’m still learning. I’m still figuring out how to communicate better, how to love my husband in the ways he actually receives love, and how to build a marriage that feels stronger with every season.
But one thing I’ve learned in our first year of marriage is this:
Sometimes your spouse is feeling things they never actually say out loud.
Not because they are hiding something. Not because they don’t love you. Sometimes they simply do not know how to put it into words.
And the more I’ve gotten to know my husband, the more I’ve realized that some of the things he needs most are actually pretty simple.
So from one wife who is still learning to another, here are 10 things your husband may wish you knew but may never say.

1. He wants to feel appreciated, too.
We often talk about how important it is for a wife to feel appreciated, and it absolutely is.
But your husband wants that feeling, too.
He wants to know that you notice the little things he does. The errands. The long days at work. The way he fixes something around the house. The way he tries to make you laugh when you are having a bad day.
He may not ask, “Do you appreciate me?”
But he might be wondering.
Sometimes a simple “Thank you for doing that” or “I noticed what you did for me today” can mean more than you realize.
Your spouse does not need constant praise.
But everyone wants to feel seen by the person they love most.
2. He does not always need you to fix the problem.
This one has been a big lesson for me.
Sometimes when my husband tells me about something frustrating, my first instinct is to help solve it.
I want to give advice. I want to figure out what he should do next. I want to make the problem disappear.
But sometimes he just wants his wife to listen.
He wants to be able to say, “Today was hard,” without immediately getting a solution.
There is something incredibly intimate about being able to talk to your spouse without feeling like every conversation has to end with an answer.
Sometimes the best response is simply:
“That sounds really hard.”
“I’m sorry you had to deal with that.”
“I’m here for you.”
You do not always have to fix it.
Sometimes you just have to be there.
3. He wants to know you still choose him.
Marriage can become comfortable very quickly.
You wake up next to the same person. You eat together. You run errands together. You talk about bills, groceries, work, laundry, and what you are having for dinner.
And suddenly the person you once got butterflies thinking about can start feeling like your roommate.
That does not mean your love is disappearing.
It means you have to keep choosing each other.
Your husband may never say, “Please make me feel like you still have a crush on me.”
But he probably wants to feel wanted.
Flirt with him.
Look at him a little longer.
Send him a random text.
Put your phone down when he walks into the room.
Kiss him for no reason.
Make him feel like your husband, not just the person you share a house with.
4. He notices how you talk about him.
This one matters more than I realized.
Your spouse should be one of the safest people in your life.
That means the way you talk about him when he is not around matters.
It is easy to vent about your husband when you are frustrated. And sometimes you absolutely need someone you trust to talk to.
But there is a difference between seeking healthy advice and constantly tearing your spouse down.
Your husband may never tell you that he notices the way you speak about him.
But he wants to know that you respect him.
He wants to feel like you are on his team.
Even during disagreements.
Especially during disagreements.
5. He wants you to tell him what you need instead of expecting him to guess.
I am learning this one the hard way.
Sometimes we think, “If he really loved me, he would know.”
But your spouse cannot read your mind.
He may genuinely have no idea why you are upset.
He may not realize you wanted him to plan the date.
He may not understand that you needed a hug instead of advice.
He may not know that something he said hurt your feelings.
And expecting him to magically figure it out usually creates more frustration for both of you.
Tell him.
“I need you to listen.”
“I want some quality time together.”
“That hurt my feelings.”
“Can you please help me with this?”
Being direct is not unromantic.
Sometimes it is one of the most loving things you can do for your marriage.

6. He wants to know that you believe in him.
Your husband probably has dreams that he does not talk about all the time.
Maybe he wants to build a business.
Maybe he wants to become better at his career.
Maybe he wants to provide for your family in a certain way.
Maybe he has a goal he is scared to fail at.
Having someone at home who genuinely believes in you can change everything.
You do not have to pretend every idea is perfect.
But remind your spouse that you believe he is capable.
Tell him when you are proud of him.
Celebrate his wins.
Encourage him when something does not work out.
Sometimes the person standing beside you can be the difference between giving up and trying one more time.
7. He wants you to have a life outside of him.
Marriage is about becoming one, but that does not mean you have to become the exact same person.
You can have your own hobbies.
Your own friends.
Your own interests.
Your own dreams.
And your husband can have his, too.
I think there is something really beautiful about two people choosing each other while still becoming the best versions of themselves.
You should not have to give up who you are to be a good wife.
And your husband should not have to give up who he is to be a good husband.
A healthy marriage gives you someone to come home to, not someone who becomes your entire world.
8. He wants peace at home, but not perfection.
This does not mean your home needs to be perfectly clean.
It does not mean you need to cook every night.
It does not mean you need to have a perfect marriage where nobody ever gets annoyed.
I think “peace” is much simpler than that.
It means knowing that home is a safe place to be yourself.
It means being able to make mistakes without feeling like your spouse will hold them over your head forever.
It means being able to disagree without becoming enemies.
It means knowing that even when you are both having a bad day, you are still on the same team.
Your marriage does not have to be perfect to be beautiful.
9. He wants intimacy that is about more than sex.
This is something I think more couples need to talk about.
Intimacy is not only physical.
It is laughing together until your stomach hurts.
It is holding hands in the car.
It is talking in bed when you should probably be asleep.
It is knowing what your spouse is worried about before they even say it.
It is kissing in the kitchen.
It is having conversations that make you feel closer.
Physical intimacy matters deeply in a marriage, but emotional intimacy makes physical intimacy feel even more meaningful.
Your spouse wants to feel connected to you, not just physically close to you.

10. More than anything, he wants to know that you are in this together.
Marriage is not you versus him.
It is the two of you versus the problem.
There will be stressful seasons.
There will be misunderstandings.
There will be days when one of you is exhausted and the other is frustrated.
There will be moments when you wonder why marriage is harder than you expected.
But one of the most comforting things I have learned in my first year of marriage is that we do not have to have everything figured out.
We just have to keep choosing each other.
Keep talking.
Keep laughing.
Keep apologizing.
Keep learning.
Keep dating.
Keep being curious about each other.
Keep coming back to each other.
Because at the end of the day, your husband probably does not need a perfect wife.
He needs his wife.
The woman who knows him.
The woman who laughs at his dumb jokes.
The woman who supports his dreams.
The woman who tells him when she is hurt instead of making him guess.
The woman who still looks at him and thinks, “I choose you.”
And honestly, I think that is what most of us want from our marriages.
To feel chosen.
Not just on our wedding day.
But on an ordinary Tuesday.
When life is messy.
When we are tired.
When we disagree.
When nobody else is watching.
I am still young, and I know I have a lot left to learn about marriage.
But if our first year has taught me anything, it is this:
A strong marriage is not built by two people who never mess up. It is built by two people who keep choosing to love each other better.
And sometimes loving your spouse better starts with simply asking:
“What do you wish I understood about you that you have never known how to say?”
You might be surprised by the answer.
