Waiting for Marriage? 10 Intimacy Conversations You NEED to Have Before Saying “I Do”

If you’re waiting for marriage, you’ve probably spent a lot of time thinking about the moment when you finally get to experience married life together.
But there’s something I wish more couples talked about before getting married:
What do you actually expect intimacy to look like once you’re married?
As a 22-year-old newlywed, I’ve realized that getting married doesn’t magically make two people experts at intimacy.
You can love each other deeply and still have different expectations.
You can be incredibly attracted to each other and still have different sex drives.
You can be excited to finally be intimate and still feel nervous, awkward, or unsure at first.
And that’s completely normal.
If you’re waiting for marriage, you don’t have to cross your boundaries to prepare for intimacy.
But you can learn how to communicate about it.
Here are 10 conversations and questions I think couples should have before saying “I do.”

1. “What does intimacy mean to you?”
Before talking about sex, talk about intimacy.
For one person, intimacy might mean sex.
For another, it might mean cuddling, kissing, holding hands, talking in bed, showering together, or simply feeling emotionally connected.
Ask each other:
- What makes you feel closest to me?
- What makes you feel desired?
- What makes you feel emotionally connected?
- What kinds of physical affection are important to you?
- What does a healthy intimate relationship look like to you?
You may discover that you and your future spouse define intimacy differently.
That’s exactly why it’s worth talking about.
2. “What are you expecting our sex life to be like?”
This is probably one of the most important conversations for couples who are waiting.
You don’t have to know exactly what your sex life will look like.
But you should talk about your expectations.
Ask:
“What are you hoping our sex life will be like after we’re married?”
You might have completely different ideas about frequency, affection, initiation, or how important sex will be in your relationship.
Neither person has to be “right.”
The goal isn’t to create a contract.
It’s to understand each other before expectations become assumptions.

3. “How often do you think we’ll want to have sex?”
This question might feel awkward.
Ask it anyway.
You don’t need to agree on an exact number.
In fact, your preferences may change throughout your marriage depending on stress, work, health, pregnancy, children, emotions, and everything else life brings.
But talking about your expectations beforehand can help you understand something incredibly important:
Your spouse may not always want intimacy at the same time or frequency that you do.
That doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.
Differences in desire are normal.
What matters is whether you can talk about those differences with kindness rather than turning them into rejection, pressure, or resentment.
4. “How do you want to initiate intimacy?”
This is something I don’t think couples talk about enough.
Some people love being direct.
Others prefer subtle affection.
Some people feel desired when their spouse initiates.
Others feel more comfortable when intimacy develops naturally.
Ask:
- How do you like to be approached?
- What makes you feel desired?
- How do you usually show that you’re interested?
- Would you rather be asked directly or have things happen naturally?
- What makes initiation feel romantic rather than pressured?
Learning how your spouse communicates desire can make intimacy feel much more natural.
5. “What are your boundaries?”
Waiting for marriage doesn’t mean you shouldn’t talk about boundaries.
Actually, it makes these conversations even more important.
Talk honestly about what you’re comfortable with and what you’re not.
Ask:
- What are you nervous about?
- Is there anything you want to take slowly?
- What would make you feel uncomfortable?
- How should we communicate if one of us wants to stop?
- How can we make sure we both feel safe saying “not tonight”?
And remember:
Being married doesn’t eliminate the need for consent.
You should both feel comfortable communicating what you want and don’t want at any point in your marriage.

6. “What makes you feel desired?”
This question goes deeper than “What do you like?”
Ask your future spouse:
“What makes you feel attractive to me?”
Maybe it’s compliments.
Maybe it’s physical affection.
Maybe it’s flirting.
Maybe it’s when you make the first move.
Maybe it’s hearing your spouse tell you how attracted they are to you.
And don’t assume you’ll automatically know.
One of the best parts of marriage can be discovering the little things that make your spouse feel wanted.
7. “What are you nervous about?”
This might be the most important question on the entire list.
If you’re waiting for marriage, you might have a lot of expectations surrounding your first experiences together.
That can create pressure.
So ask:
“Is there anything about intimacy that makes you nervous?”
Maybe one of you is worried about feeling inexperienced.
Maybe you’re worried about body image.
Maybe you’re afraid you’ll disappoint your spouse.
Maybe you’re nervous that things won’t feel natural right away.
Maybe you’re worried about pain, awkwardness, or simply not knowing what you’re doing.
Talk about it.
You don’t have to pretend to be confident when you’re actually nervous.
You should be able to tell the person you’re marrying what’s going on in your head.
8. “How will we handle it if our sex drives are different?”
This is one conversation I especially wish couples would have before marriage.
Because you can be incredibly compatible emotionally and still have different levels of sexual desire.
What happens if one person wants intimacy more frequently?
What happens if one person goes through a season where they don’t want sex as often?
What happens after having a baby?
What happens during stressful seasons?
What happens when one person feels rejected?
Talk about how you’ll handle those moments before they happen.
The goal isn’t to guarantee you’ll always agree.
The goal is to know you’ll be able to talk about it without making each other feel ashamed.

9. “How are we going to talk about what we like?”
Your spouse can’t read your mind.
And you can’t read theirs.
So talk about how you’ll communicate during intimacy.
Ask:
- How comfortable are you giving feedback?
- How should we tell each other when something feels good?
- How should we communicate when something doesn’t feel good?
- Would you rather talk about intimacy immediately or afterward?
- How can we make conversations about sex feel safe instead of embarrassing?
This might feel awkward at first.
But the more comfortable you become talking about intimacy, the easier it can become to grow together.
You aren’t supposed to know everything on day one.
You’re supposed to be able to learn each other.
10. “How are we going to keep intimacy alive after the honeymoon?”
This might be the biggest one.
It’s easy to imagine intimacy when you’re newly married and everything feels exciting.
But what happens six months later?
A year later?
When you’re exhausted?
When you’re stressed?
When work is overwhelming?
When you have children?
When life gets routine?
Talk about how you’ll intentionally protect intimacy in your marriage.
Ask:
“What can we do to make sure physical and emotional intimacy doesn’t get pushed to the bottom of our list?”
Because intimacy isn’t something you achieve once.
It’s something you continue building.
And sometimes that means planning dates.
Sometimes it means putting your phones away.
Sometimes it means having a conversation.
Sometimes it means cuddling on the couch.
And sometimes it means making space for sexual intimacy.
The important thing is that you continue making your relationship a priority.

You Can Wait and Still Talk About Intimacy
If you’re waiting for marriage, I want you to know that talking about intimacy doesn’t mean you’re compromising your decision to wait.
You can have conversations about sex without having sex.
You can talk about your expectations without acting on them.
You can talk about boundaries before you ever have to use them.
And you can learn how to communicate about intimacy before you’re actually navigating it together.
In fact, I think that’s one of the best ways you can prepare for marriage.
Because marriage doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly know exactly what your spouse wants.
It doesn’t mean you’ll always have the same sex drive.
It doesn’t mean every intimate moment will be perfect.
And it definitely doesn’t mean you can read each other’s minds.
What makes the difference is being willing to say:
“Tell me what you need.”
“How can I make you feel loved?”
“What makes you feel desired?”
“Is there anything you’re nervous about?”
“How can we make this better for both of us?”
Those conversations might feel awkward before marriage.
But I’d much rather have a few awkward conversations while you’re engaged than enter marriage with a list of unspoken expectations.
Because you’re not just waiting for a wedding day.
You’re preparing to share your life, your body, your emotions, and your heart with another person.
And that’s something worth talking about.
